Probiotics May Save Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

Cancer, the name itself, creates a kind of uncertainty and fear for life. Day to day the industry giants are investing a lot, and many researches are going on, but still, the outcomes are so expensive and very uncertain.

If somebody has survived cancer, it feels almost exactly as he took a rebirth and proves the ecstasy of the oncologist who treated him, because most of the time the cancer treatments and cures for cancer are very tough to go through.

The most common thought to be effective, and the last resort for cancer patients is chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Let us see first, what is chemotherapy and what effect does it have on your body, also whether there are any risks of chemotherapy?

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy, by the name, means treatment with chemicals.  These days usually the word chemo therapy is more pronounced to describe the use of chemical mediators for cancer cell death in cancer treatment.

Chemotherapy in cancer treatment helps to kill the excessively growing malignant cells usually called as cancerous cells.

Many intellectuals around the world believe that all tumors from different tissues and organs can be killed by high doses of chemotherapy and radiation, but the current challenge in the later staged cancer patient is that the weak patient cannot actually tolerate such high doses and this is leading to his death before killing the tumor. Also, preparing for chemotherapy mentally is also tough and on top of that the chemotherapy diet which is very horrendous.

The Latest research finding gives a sense of relief in this dreadful challenge.

This is a study conducted at the University of Michigan and about to be published in the journal Nature. The result of this study is an outcome of the trials done on mice and still not implemented on human.

Though the study includes some sophisticated observations and findings let’s have a look at the jest of it that is beneficial to the mankind.

In this study researchers gave lethal chemotherapy doses to the mice; these doses are even lethal for human beings. In spite of getting more cancer as a side effect of chemo therapy, some of the mice still survived the dose.

Don’t you think it’s something interesting, and I hope something should be running in your mind as to?

How the Subjects Managed Deadly Chemotherapy?

The researchers injected some of the mice with a molecule that your body synthesizes naturally. This molecule has been genetically engineered into mice and maintained good environment for the right gene expression.

The substance is called “Rspo1” or “R-spondon1.” It activates stem cell production within your own intestinal walls, and these stem cells are like super tissue regeneration machines that rebuild damaged tissues faster than the chemotherapy can destroy them, thereby allowing the patient to survive an otherwise deadly dose of chemo poison.

They finally observed that 50-75% of the mice treated with R-spondon1 have survived the fatal dose.

But how can you generate or maintain the level of R-spoon 1?

The answer to this question will be Probiotics, here comes why this article is important to all nutrition lovers.

Okay, but what are probiotics? Click it to know more about beneficial intestinal micro-flora.

Human intestinal genes contain R-Spondon 1, and this is the gene responsible for the growth of intestinal stem cells that help in the growth of the new intestinal layer for every 4-5 days in a healthy human being.

And what determines the health of those stem cells more than anything else?

The local intestinal environment which is predominantly determined by the gut bacteria plays a major role in determining the health of stem cells.

If your probiotics are in balance, the gene expression of your epithelial cells is normal and healthy. If your gut bacteria are insufficient, then the gene expression will be suppressed, thereby slowing or halting the regenerative potential of your intestinal cells.

This is why people who have imbalanced intestinal flora also suffer from inflammatory intestinal conditions such as Crohn’s, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and so on.

Therefore, always maintain good levels of probiotics either through natural source or probiotic supplements. Probiotics and chemotherapy have become very relatable.

Thus, probiotics are key determining factors in the ability of your intestine to maintain the appropriate gene expression for the very kind of rapid cellular regeneration that can help your body survive a fatal dose of chemotherapy.

Also, probiotics for cancer patients are a major advancement and also probiotics during chemotherapy gives the person a lot of relief from the dreadful one has to suffer otherwise.

But, many people on chemotherapy will be treated even with antibiotics to suppress the infection caused due to weakness of the patient.

These antibiotics may disturb the intestinal micro flora and so combination of chemotherapy and antibiotic treatment simultaneously can be lethal.

Finally, in-case of patients undergoing chemotherapy, try to maintain normal levels of beneficial bacteria i.e. probiotics even by giving probiotic supplements.

The article may be a bit complex but still, I hope it’s informative. Do share and pass on this information to the people undergoing chemotherapy.
