It has been in practice for ages, especially popular among ancient Romans.

Is Steam Bath Good? Here are the top-most steam bath benefits.

  1. The most common benefit of a steam bath is relaxation. It gives a soothing effect to your body and mind, thereby reducing stress levels and tension.
  2. It also provides your muscle the best form of relief, especially near the joints. When joints and muscles are relaxed, you have fewer chances of encountering conditions like arthritis and other joint pains.
  3. You surely must have experienced sweating while taking this bath. The cumulative effect of sweating results in a 30% reduction of toxins in your body. It is an effortless and practical way to detox and with a greater degree of effectiveness. Not even detoxifying foods can rival the benefit of this bath in this regard.
  4. This increases the temperature of your body temporarily. This phenomenon is known as hyperthermia.
  5. In a controlled setting, this favors you by killing harmful micro-organisms that might have invaded your body when you go out or perform routine activities. If not killed, organisms will at least be weakened, making them available to your immune system to fight them. Thus, it helps your immunity.
  6. This regulates and stimulates the flow of blood and boosts your metabolism. Thus, it also aids in steam bath weight loss.
  7. It helps you generate heat from your body. This in turn increases the blood circulation to your skin and thereby helps in skin nourishment.
  8. The heat thus also generated helps you to get rid of the fat deposited under the skin. For people with oily skin, it is an added benefit, because it reduces the chances of developing acne that is caused due to fat in the sebaceous glands.
  9. Steam bath benefits for skin: Post having this bath; your skin looks significantly radiant and healthier. The skin gets sufficiently hydrated which improves its elasticity and gives a youthful look. Detoxification also helps in making your skin glow.

All good uses and benefits of steam bath bring along with them certain undesirable aspects too. Similarly, there are certain disadvantages of the bath too. Let’s check out them.

I have been taking a steam bath for the past one month. My skin looks smooth and clean when steam baths. There is a possibility that the sweat will come out of the body and reduce the pressure on the kidneys. Experiencing an increase in blood traffic. Body temperature is high. There has been no ill effects so far. I take steam baths four to five times a week. Fifteen to twenty minutes at a time.

  5. Manav says:

    Dear Mam,
Nearly all content on internet suggests that you should take steam bath and cold shower alternatively as it goes according to the contrast therapy. But I think it is not healthy and may damage nerves as our grandparents advised us against the ill effects of sarad-garm.
    What actually is right?
Do you have any link or website or proof that suggests that contrast therapy is dangerous?

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

Hi Manav I will not say contrast therapy is good as well as cant comment it is dangerous , The simple thing is here it depends on person to person. When you are taking steam you body metabolism increases due to high temperature , when you are taking cold water bath again your body metabolism increases with low temperature and in both means you will achieve results towards weight loss or inch loss. But anything in excess is bad you can surely use contrast therapy once a week and it has no side effects

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi Sandeep
Taking steam regularly opens up the pores of your body resulting in acne and dryness in skin, Also taking steam on daily basis is not advisable as it can cause weakness in body.
Steam Bath thrice a week is advisable and usually does not have any side effects.

    Hi Mukta,

I read your article and I must say its quite balanced (well done) Then I read responses to the comments and I surmise you have the credibility So its safe to ask you My question- I have been taking steam 15 mins twice a day back to back with 10 mins gap between them. The gym that I go to said its bad for My health…is that true ? I positive I read somewhere that its okay but now I am not sure, since you know more about this your opinion will help.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

Hi master yes it can be bad for your health as you are cooling down your body and again moving to a warm temperature.By taking back to back steam. Also I advice maximum time for taking steam should be 10-15 min only as while taking stem bath all the pores of your body opens and your toxins are removed. It is always advisable to let your body cool down naturally after steam bath and cool down time will be 1-2 hrs and also after that again you should not bring your body to same state as it may cause stomach upset, boils and other harmful effects.
I advice you to take steam for 15 min three times a week only

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

Hi Ahmed Both saunas and steam rooms provide essentially the same benefits. The high heat will open up your pores, cleansing the outer layers of skin. Overall, this heat will temporarily lower your pulse and your blood pressure while causing you to sweat out salts from your body.I would advice you to choose one of them which you feel is more suitable and not go for both in a day.

you can take bath with bath salts or other skin care products that will moisturize your skin.
you can take cold shower as your skin will become refreshed and you will actually feel lighter.
Using soap immediately after steam bath will not harm you, you can wash yourself with soap and then use any moisturizing cream.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi Prakash
As far as i know steam bath has usually no negative effects on your skin.
If you have eczema or sensitive skin, it’s best to avoid saunas and steam, as moist heat from a steam room draws water out of the skin, eczema i.e excessively dry, irritated skin can become worse.
Sensitive skin can become irritated and can cause a rash caused by skin allergy or irritation and these may result in itching more intensely.
If you have normal skin, limited exposure i. e 15 minutes can be beneficial to the skin
If you have any skin disease, make sure to ask your dermatologist for advice.
Meanwhile, you can follow the below tips:
Wash off your skin with mild Ph. soap and pat dry after sweating or exercise.
Take a cool shower or bath.
Do get out of the heat.
You can wear cool, breathable fabrics like cotton.
Try to maintain comfortable temperatures with fans and air conditioning

  25. Anamika says:

    Hi Mukta

Can u suggest Completely procedure what should be do Before and after taking Steam…So that can be give us more benefits of steams and what shouldn’t be do after and before taking steam so that would be harmful….

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi Anamika
Here are some tips to be followed during Steam Bath:
      1. Do not eat for an hour or two before entering a steam room as the heat of the steam could interfere with your digestion.
      2. Take a warm shower before steam bathing.
      3. Drink at least 1 glass of water prior using the steam room and continue drinking plenty of water during the session.
      4. Average steam room sessions last from 15 to 20 minutes. If you are a first time user, start slowly with only a few minutes, and then gradually build longer sessions.
      5. If you start feeling dizzy, nauseous, weak or uncomfortable for any other reason, exit the steam room immediately.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi Anamika
Steam baths are not appropriate for people with health conditions such as high blood pressure and respiratory problems. Apart from that, you need to be concerned with the potential for fluid and electrolyte losses. As long as you stay well-hydrated and eat a well-balanced diet, it should be OK. Drink water while you are in the steam bath.
If you find you feel weak after your steam bath, that’s an indication you are over-doing it

I personally feel our body is not supposed to go through the thermal shock every day and may be steam bath once in 2-3 days is okay.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi Akhila
when you sit in a room for steam bath, water is leaving your body through the pores in your skin. as we all know that water plays a significant role of body weight, losing enough water will cause you to lose a few pounds. steam bath is found to be very beneficial for natural weight loss.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi
you can do both but its better you apply olive oil before taking steam as oil helps to create more sweat and sweat is necessary to clean the body. olive oil is more suitable for all types of skin, it promote a smooth and radiant complexion and it also maintains the elasticity of skin.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Hi
In steam bath your skin temperature rises and your blood is flowing via your skin. your pulse rises to keep up your blood pressure. when you go to the cold water, your veins will suddenly contract and rise the blood pressure momentarily. As far as i know, it doesn’t give any medical health benefits.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

Hi Shuvajit I must say a very good question from your end, If we consider the comparison between the 2 for health benefits then I would say both are quite similar, but then Infrared sauna goes much deeper into the skin without causing open pores and skin problems which can be caused by traditional steam bath as it works on high temperature.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

Hi Laksh yes steam bath helps to remove toxins in the body and hence helps in skin nourishment, twice weekly will be more then enough

I would like to say that having leukoderma has no relation with steam bath.Neither it will help cure it nor worsen the same.It will give you all the benefits which it gives to a normal skin person. You can take it 3 times a week without any problem.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Dear Sarika,

There are no such restrictions of taking steam bath, you can take it thrice a week and no precautions are required as such only that you should not be taking steam bath when you are too full.take it 30 minutes post meal.

    • Mukta agrawal says:

      Dear Vikas,

There are no such disadvantages of taking steam bath. But if taken in excess it can open your skin pores and which can lead to skin problems. Also as it is summer season body does not require too much of heat to remove toxins and sweat. We naturally sweat this season.

Somehow, i always Become A LOTTT fairer after steam baths, and im worried that this might be a bad thing, please advice!

Also, can i steam bathe on back to back days? Like, Monday, tuesday then saturday ( Maintaining three times a week)

And should i be taking a bath after steam baths? Or before?
And should i apply oil on hair and body before steam baths?

    • Mukta agrawal says:

      Dear Abhishek,

It is quite natural to get fairer with steam bath as it remove toxins from your body.
Taking steam bath back to back days are absolutely fine until and unless you maintain thrice a week.
You should take the steam bath first and then your regular bath.
Applying oil is just required so that skin pores does not get open easily and it prevents from skin complication.

    • mukta agrawal says:

      Dear Poorna,

Poor quality steam can be the reason second reason may be due to lack of energy in the body as it was the first time and summer season.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Dear Gaurav

You do not need to do anything as if you are using steam bath for only 3 times a weak and still you want to protect it then apply oil and then go for steaming

  53. Shalin says:

    Hello Mukta,

Is there any truth to experiencing permanent hair loss due to frequent steam baths? (2-3 times in a week). Kindly suggest.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Dear Shalini,

If your hair is having a complete oily or dry skin then frequent steam bath can damage the follicles which can lead to hair fall. You should reduce the frequency of taking steam bath once in 10 days if you face the problem of scalp dryness especially.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Dear Chaitali,

Any good thing also when done in excess can damage your skin.Steam bath open the pores of your skin and hence there are high chances that your skin become sensitive.I would advice only 2-3 days per week.

  54. Lorraine says:

Thanks for the info Akshata. Are home steam baths any different from the ones provided by health spas, gyms? The reason why I’m asking is because my favorite “me” time is soaking in the hot bath in the evenings at home everyday, something I always look forward to.

    • Mukta Agrawal says:

      Dear Lorraine,

Steam bath if taken in a proper manner that is no water is used to take bath but just the hot steam touches all the parts of your body, there is no difference between the spa and home. But to create that atmosphere is not easy.If you have the same at home you are the lucky one.
